Mordecai Costume by celebrindal15 Mordecai Costume by celebrindal15
Mordecai from the Regular Show.

My Halloween costume for this year. I actually decided to make an effort! I bought a whole bunch of white cotton, and died it blue and grey (even though the grey turned out kinda greenish) because I couldn't find the colours I wanted. I made up the design, and based the hoodie shape on a hoodie I already own. All handstiched, 'cause I can't use a sewing machine. Been working on it for 2 weeks, I think. Maybe a bit more.

I found a paper baseball hat in an art shop, so that's incorporated into the hood. And there's sculpting wire in the beak, fingers, and tail feathers. He's got grey legs, so I'm just gonna wear black jeans with it.

Nah, its a bit battered now, after wearing it out. I can write a how-to, if you want to try making it yourself?

I admit I've been putting this off, because I wasn't looking forward to typing it all out, haha. I've no WIP photos, sorry.
1. Right, to start off, I based the shape and size on a hoodie I own.
2. I cut out the basic shapes for the hood, sleves, 3 tail feathers and 4 body pieces (3 blue, 1 white)
3. I sewed (using this stitch: [link]) the backpiece and 2 side pieces together, then sewed on the sleeves. That, allong with the material for the hood, was dyed blue. (used about 3m of matrial, I think)
4. It took a while to get the fingers in the sleeves right. In hindsight, I think I'd sew them on the outside, rather than sew the inside, then flip the material over, if you get me, because they turned out a lot shorter than I had hoped.
5. I then sewed on the white panel at the front. I didn't hem the body piece yet, until I had the hood sewed on.
6. The hood was very tricky. It took a good few tries to get the points in the head right. I had the hood sitting on a carboard baseball hat, that I bought in an art shop. I used pins and stuffing before I sewed the final edges, to make sure everything sat properly on my head.
7. When the points were finished, I cut a chunk of the sides out, and sewed in white material that was the same shape. Then, after trail and error, I sewed the hood piece onto the body piece.
8. I put wire on the hat's peak to reforce the beak. I put a few stitches around the wire to keep it in place. With some stuffing in it, I just pit a basic beak shape, nothing too fancy. That was stitched down the middle of the underside of the beak, and along the edges, where it connects to the hood.
9. The black thing between his eyes, I kinda made up a shape, put a bit of stuffing in, and sewed it on.
10. The eyes were 2 of these each: [link] Maybe a bit thicker in the middle. Black felt for the pupils.
11. The tail feathers were a longish one, and 2 normal size ones. I put modelling wire around the inside edge, so they'd have support.
12. The 2 grey shapes at the side of his head are just shapes I cut out, hemed, then sewed onto the hood.
13. I cut out holes in the sleeves, for my hands. I put modelling wire allong the inside of the fingers too.
14. I hemed the body piece, then put a piece of wire, about 10cm long, about 5cm up from the hem, and in the hem itself. I sewed the tail feathers on, making sure to sew them onto the wire. This makes them stand up.
15. And the rest is just the black and white stripes.

Phew! Hope that helps!
